Follow @ed_apps Garageband is a great app that I think any student or teacher using an iPad should consider buying. It is a multi-track audio editing app that is as robust as you will ever need (unless of course you teach audio production). Later this week I will be posting a new page full of Garageband resources for teachers, students and learning. For now, you can get your brain juices flowing by reading the list below, watching the embeded ‘how to’ videos, and then go start playing with Garageband yourself! Download Garageband from...

Follow @ed_apps An elementary school in our district recently got 30 iPads and asked for some advice implementing them with students and teachers. In addition to suggesting some starter apps, I recommended that we have conversations with kids around the appropriate use of these devices. While almost every child has used an iPad, iPod Touch, or iPhone, the exciting learning opportunities these mobile, Internet-connected, media creation devices create also open the door to new challenges. Cyberbullying or inappropriate web publishing happens more through the camera than regular computer use does; the...

Follow @ed_apps If you’ve ever made a video in iMovie, a song in Garageband, a book in Book Creator, (or made anything really) on an iPad, than you know the pain of getting that product off of the iPad. That’s why I’ve made this video (below) to teach you how to pull files off of the iPad, and how to put it back on to the iPad, in less than 5 minutes. I’ve started to teach students how to do this, so that as a teacher I’m not stuck for...

Follow @ed_apps One of my favourite apps to sit down with and learn is Qwiki. Qwiki must have millions of ‘articles’ that are actually interactive videos. Using the simple english from wikipedia and a series of photos and videos from wikimedia, Qwiki generates videos that you can watch, pause, interact with, and explore new learnings. A feature that I fell in love with while at ASCD12 in Philly is the location feature. Qwiki takes all of their video articles and embeds them on a map, allowing you to explore...

Follow @ed_apps The most popular post I’ve ever written is 13 Ways to use iMovie in the Classroom, having reached thousands of readers in the first day. I’ve been meaning to follow it up ever since, and now I finally have created a short video introduction to using iMovie on the iPad. This first video is a short (less than 5 min) tutorial on using iMovie for iPad from start to finish. The next video I will be posting (which might take a week or two) will be on some...

Follow @ed_apps A big issue with school mobile devices is that they are often shared, and don’t have full profile accounts like a computer does. This means that any user has access to any app or information from any other user. I put together a poster (prints best in 11×17 Tabloid size paper) that talks about some of the basic things students should consider when using shared mobile devices to keep themselves safe and to respect others they are working with. Check out this Digital Citizenship & iPads Follow...

Follow @ed_apps Is there an app for that? Well, chances are there are dozens of apps for anything you want to do, but sometimes you find one app that is robust enough to have multiples uses for you and your students. For me, iMovie is that app. I find myself using it for everything from slow motion videography to documentation, to presentations and everything in-between. Below are 13 ways that I have used iMovie (or have heard of others using iMovie) with students to enhance learning. Documentation: Use the camera...
